The Reps We Stopped Doing
What a London cab test, a GPS, and a team of complacent coworkers have in common.
I had an interesting conversation with a colleague last week. Her team has been leaning into AI-assisted workflows. She was troubled by an observation that Claude was increasingly becoming the first go-to for most tasks—even things well within their individual areas of expertise. She noticed herself, and her teammates taking a back seat on tasks they used to own. It would be fine—AI is helpful—except in hindsight she felt like the quality had suffered because they were becoming more complacent. She didn't feel good about it. She wondered what effect this new habit would have on them. She wondered, is there such a thing as TMAI (too much AI)?
There's a test cab drivers in London used to have to pass. It was called The Knowledge, and it took years — every street, every shortcut, memorized. Researchers later found these drivers' brains were literally shaped differently. The part that handles spatial memory was bigger. They'd built it, one wrong turn at a time.
Then GPS showed up. Fair enough — why memorize anything when the map will tell you? Slightly ominous, though, because it turns out the shape of the thing doesn't stay put when you stop using it. You let the map do the work, and the part of you that used to do the work gets quiet.
Your colleague's team isn't the only one noticing. You hear it in hallway talk, when people are pretending to complain about the weather. Someone mentions that a junior hire seems "a little vague on the fundamentals." Someone else admits, half-joking, that they haven't written a first draft of anything in six months. Then everyone looks at their coffee cups for a beat. It's closer to the feeling you get when you realize you can't recall anyone's phone number anymore — just a fogginess where a capacity used to be.
The students are the ones I'd watch. Teachers will describe, if you ask privately, a particular flavor of pause that wasn't there before. The student stares at the page and nothing comes. For years now, the question has arrived and been quietly forwarded elsewhere — typed into a different window, the answer pasted back — and that's what answering a question has felt like. The early years were supposed to be the easy reps, the quiet work where the wiring happens before anyone needs it. But the easy reps were the first thing to go, because of course they were. Why wouldn't you? So the wiring didn't happen, and now the hard question is sitting there waiting for a machine that isn't supposed to be in the room.
The thing nobody wants to say at dinner parties is that every bit of help we accept is a rep we don't do. And the reps were doing something, even when we thought they were busywork. Especially then. The funhouse-mirror part is that the faculty your friend would need to figure out whether she's been affected is the exact faculty she's worried might be affected. You can't really run the diagnostic without the part that's been on vacation.
